The Dreaded Conversant

Why do I speak when I've nothing to say?
Just to hear myself talk? Or keep silence at bay?
Do I think someone listens; do I think they care?
Can't I see their glazed look and how blankly they stare?

Yes, they smile, and they nod and pretend to agree
Though they haven't a clue what I've said, actually.
They just wait for a pause in my mind-numbing chatter
So they can say, "Have a good day!" and then scatter.

But does that deter me? Most definitely not?
For I'm most determined to continue my plot.
I just trap my next victim and pick up the thread,
Brashly unmindful of their countenance of dread.

Now it's no fun to listen, that point is quite clear.
It's easy on the voice but quite hard on the ear.
I won't argue the fact that I'm boring. Tis true.
But if you think I'm dull, you should listen to you.
